Every centre page on this site now shows its own pass rate, taken directly from DVSA’s official published data. The national average is about 50% — but individual centres range from the mid-30s to around 70%. That’s a huge spread for what’s supposed to be the same standardised test. Here’s what’s actually behind it.
It’s about the roads, not the examiners
DVSA examiners mark to the same national standard everywhere — the same fault categories, the same pass mark, the same test structure. What differs enormously from town to town is the road network a test actually has to use.
A test centre surrounded by complex multi-lane roundabouts, fast dual carriageways, and awkward unmarked junctions is going to produce more faults than one in a smaller town with simpler, lower-traffic roads — regardless of how good the candidates are. That’s most of the gap you see between a ~35% centre and a ~65% one: route difficulty, not leniency.
Local candidate pool matters too
Pass rate also reflects who’s testing there. A centre in a busy conurbation often has a higher proportion of first-time, inexperienced learners relative to a quieter rural centre where more candidates have had extended on-road practice before booking. Neither is “better” — it’s just a different mix of who’s sitting the test.
What the number doesn’t tell you
A low pass rate at your centre doesn’t mean you’re more likely to fail — it means the average candidate there has historically failed more often, often because of exactly the two factors above. Plenty of well-prepared candidates pass at low-pass-rate centres every week. If anything, a lower centre pass rate is a signal to spend more time on the actual local roads before test day, which is the entire reason this site exists.
The data itself
Figures are DVSA’s own, published quarterly, covering practical car tests (category B) over the most recent full year on record. We only treat a centre’s figure as meaningful once it’s based on at least 500 tests in that period — smaller samples swing too easily on a handful of results to be a fair comparison. See the easiest and hardest test centres for the full ranked list, or find your own test centre to see its figure alongside free practice routes for the actual roads it uses.
